Abstract: Puberty is accompanied by physical, psychological, and emotional changes adapted to
ensure reproductive and parenting success. Children with early puberty are at a risk for risk-taking behaviors,
early sexual debut, potential sexual abuse, and psychosocial difficulties. Altered puberty timing is also of
concern for the development of reproductive tract cancers later in life. For example,an early age of menarche
is a risk factor for breast cancer. Investigation of the brain by scientists from neurobiology, neuroimaging and
the behavioral sciences is providing startling insights into adolescent development. Over the past two decades,
much has been written about barriers faced by young people in accessing sexual and reproductive health care.
Worldwide, initiatives are emerging that attempt to remove these barriers and help reach young people with the
reproductive health services they need. Appropriate controlled assessments of the effect of youth鄄friendly
health鄄service models on young people’s sexual and reproductive health outcomes should be the focus of future
research agendas.
