Abstract: Pelvic organ prolapse(POP)is strongly associated with damage in strutural and functional
integrity of pelvic floor tissues. Collagen fibers and elastic fibers are the major components of connective tissue.
Their metabolic abnormalities may be one of the pathogenesis of POP. Reduction of collagen fibers synthesis or
inerease of degradation may lead to POP. Pelvic floor tissues are extremely rich in elastic fibers. It is important
for reproductive tissues accommodate enormous expansion in pregnancy and involution after parturition. The
study has that failure of elastic fiber homeostasis may be the basis of the etiology of POP.
